Section 1 of 13

Thinking About It

What metaphysics actually means, and how people have argued about whether any of this is real.

Before you can map a territory you have to agree what the territory is. This section is the groundwork: what the word metaphysical actually means and how it came to mean two quite different things, what philosophers have argued about consciousness and mind and matter, and how scholars study mystical experience without either endorsing it or dismissing it.

It is deliberately the first section on the site. Almost everything that follows — astrology, tarot, chakras, alchemy, near-death experience — sits on top of assumptions about what exists and what counts as knowing something. Those assumptions are worth looking at directly before they start doing quiet work in the background.

Nothing here will tell you whether any of it is true. The point is to hand you the tools that people have used to argue about it, so that when you read the rest of the site you are reading it with your own equipment rather than ours.
